Muskeg

Muskeg is a captivating ecosystem unique to the far north of our planet. It covers flat, boggy terrain, which remains wet thanks to the permafrost, clay, and icebergs that render the soil too impenetrable for drainage. This unique environment features limited vegetation—acidic soils and lack of fertility make it inhospitable to most plants, apart from those specially adapted to survive such harsh conditions. Even though there aren’t any tall trees in the muskeg, it still provides a beautiful and captivating experience. Here, native plants thrive despite the intense acidity and lack of fertility that characterize most of these unforgiving terrains. Ferns, mosses, and small shrubs cover the eerie wetlands that teem with life!
